How to Get Internet Abroad: SIM Cards, eSIMs, and Wi-Fi Options Explained

How Do You Get Internet Abroad?

Before leaving Japan, many people rent an international pocket Wi-Fi or buy a local SIM card. However, I used neither.

Hotel Wi-Fi was enough, and Google Maps works even offline once you load it in a Wi-Fi area.

But people like me are rare—most travelers use some kind of data plan.

Benefits of Getting an Internet Plan

O

If you want to stream videos or call an Uber in an area without Wi-Fi, having your own internet connection makes everything much easier and safer.

Honestly, I was just being extremely frugal. Most travelers either get an international data plan or buy a local SIM card. SIM cards can usually be purchased or rented at airports (varies by country).

Drawbacks of Getting a Data Plan

The only real downside is the cost. I try to travel as cheaply as possible, so I didn’t even buy a SIM card—but realistically, having pocket Wi-Fi or a SIM is better.

For example, in areas without public transportation, you may need to call an Uber to avoid being overcharged by local taxis. But that requires internet access.

Conclusion

Although I personally rely on hotel, airport, and free Wi-Fi, having your own data plan definitely gives you more peace of mind.

Should You Buy a SIM Locally or Get a Plan in Japan?

The cheapest option is usually buying a local SIM card, but new affordable international plans are appearing, so compare before deciding. Also, local SIM cards are very small, so be careful not to lose them.
